Fight for Democracy in Hong Kong
On December 4, 2005, Hong Kong people took to the streets to protest for democracy and call on the Government to allow universal suffrage. The protesters were demanding the right to directly elect their Chief Executive and the Legislative Council.
The march started at Victoria Park at 3pm and headed towards the Government Offices in Central.
There was controversy over crowd turnout ranging from 63,000 (the official police estimate) to over 250,000 claimed by the organisers.
On December 21st the Chief Executive, Donald Tsang’s reform package was defeated by democracy advocates. The democrats are asking for a timetable for full democracy, the government and Beijing are adamant that this will not be forthcoming.
The question is: Universal Suffrage - WHEN?
